GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Issue #269 September 23, 2001 Soaring Back in the days when my wife and I lived on Vancouver Island, off Canadas West Coast, one of our favourite activities was walking. Our favourite spot was a little beach called Goose Spit. When the weather was right, you could see the mountains across on the mainland. There were always interesting birds to watch, and on occasion we could see seals playing. My favorite were the eagles. At times you could see dozens of bald eagles in the course of an hours walk. They would rise lazily on the air currents off the cliffs behind the beach, rise upwards and soar at altitudes so high that we could barely see them. They were amazing to watch. We would be walking along the beach in the rain, and they would soar above it all. No matter what seemed to come their way, they just stayed up there and soared, unaffected by it. Some people say that they can sense a storm coming and head up early to ride the wind currents, I dont know if thats true or not. I do know, that I was often envious of the way they could get up there and leave things behind. Life is fair from trouble free, even the secular world realizes that and wants to soar above the problems of life. I remember a poster from the 70s with the logo "Its hard to soar with the eagles when you work with a bunch of turkeys." One of my youngest sons favourite things is eagles and his favorite Bible passage is from the prophet Isaiah Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:28-31 NIV Are you going through one of those storms in life right now? Hold fast to the Lord and He will strengthen you to get through it. You will soar above it on eagles wings. Until next time, may you spend your time above the clouds. God bless. Kevin
