GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #255 Little Things September 09, 2001
Last night I was enjoying a few moments of sitting and reading a book that tells of a missionaries adventures in the jungle. I really enjoy that kind of book. In the midst of the jungle, the missionary and his companions ran out of water. Lost in unfamiliar territory, they nearly perished before stumbling upon a stream and satisfying their thirst. As people, we quickly learn to take things for granted. Here in North America, clean fresh drinking water is something that is available in abundance, so we never think about it. Its necessary for life, but weve become so accustomed to its presence we dont even think about what would happen if we didnt have it. There are many necessities and luxuries in our lives that we just assume will always be there. How would we react if we didnt have them? Its not just the big stuff we take for granted, its the little things. We are blessed in thousands of ways by God daily and never offer Him thanks. An old Joni Mitchell song captures the feeling well, when she sings Dont it always seem to go, that we dont know what weve got til its gone? The Bible reminds us of the source of blessing: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17 NIV Maybe its time we took stock of our situation and gave thanks and glory to God for His provision. Until next time, may you remember to truly be thankful for all you have. God bless.
