GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 254 September 08, 2001 What is faith?
True faith is something that people talk about, but is hard to define. Is it a desperate hope? Perhaps an intellectual understanding of a concept? Maybe some kind of warm fuzzy feeling? Is it a system of belief? Where does it come from? How do you get it? Let me use a familiar story from the Gospels to define faith: One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!"He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him. Luke 8:22-25 NIV The answer to what is faith, appears in Jesus question, Where is your faith?. I believe this is more than simply a rebuke for their lack of faith, it is a question of what their faith is in. He is the manifestation of their faith and He is in the boat with them. He is saying to them, dont be afraid, your faith is here. You dont find Jesus by looking for faith. You find faith by seeking Jesus. Knowing Him, you know faith. True faith is more than a hope, or an intellectual exercise. It is more than just a feeling. True faith is found in a person, the person of the Living God, Jesus Christ. Faith in anything else is vain hope. Until next time, may you know your faith, Jesus Christ, even more. God bless. Kevin © 2001 K.F. "Kevin" Corbin All Rights Reserved |
