GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #253 September 07, 2001 STORM CLOUDS   The sun had almost entirely disappeared behind the western horizon. The sky was to the east was as black as the coming night. A heavy layer of dark clouds covered most of the sky. The clouds were varying dark shades of gray, purple, and colors I can’t describe. The storm that was coming was a big one. In the distance was the rumble of thunder and the flash of lightning. I hoped to be home before the storm hit, but the clouds were moving fast and I figured the dog and I were going to get pretty wet. Suddenly the thunder and lightning stopped. I looked up and was astounded by what I saw. In the dying moment of the sunset, the sun caught the front edges of the clouds and turned them from dark and threatening to brightly light and a thing of beauty. I wished I had brought my camera because it was one of those scenes that would have made an incredible photograph. It was just a reminder to me that the darkness can roar all it likes, but ultimately, it is the Light who is in control. One of the fundamental tenants of the faith is that Jesus is returning. There has been lots of debate about when, but He makes it clear He is ruling from heaven and returning for His people. "I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."            Mark 14:62 NIV Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."                                            Revelation 1:7-8 NIV The fanfare that will accompany His coming will put the thunder and lightning to shame. The clouds I saw in the sunlight will be nothing compared to the cloud our Saviour returns on. No matter how bleak the storm clouds in your life may look, or how much the darkness roars and rumbles, remember He is in control and your hope is based on Him.
