GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #308 October 31, 2001 The Apprentice
I grabbed my tool belt and strapped it on. I made a visual check to made sure everything I would need for the days job was in place. I followed the man I was apprenticed to and did what He did. I did what He told me. I made lots of mistakes, but he never seemed to lose patience. A great teacher, he just showed me or instructed me as many times as it took me to get it right. I was so proud of my accomplishments that it took me many years to realize all the tools in my belt were made of plastic. My saw, my hammer, my square, my drill, my pencil and more were the plastic tools of a small child. Despite all my hard work and efforts, everything that got accomplished was really done by him. Ive also come to recognize that while I caused the carpenter extra work, He was pleased to have me work at His feet. My efforts alone were fruitless, but my enthusiasm and company were a blessing to Him. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1 NIV Like the proud father and teacher He is, He rejoices at our efforts to please Him. Until next time, don your tool belt and work hard as His apprentice, and know that your efforts will never be in vain. He will enjoy them. God bless.
