GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #303 October 26, 2001 EBENEZER
I suspect that if you are like most people, the vision that came to mind when you read this mornings title was of the cranky old miser, whose life was transformed, in Charles Dickenss classic story A Christmas Carol. Some of you who have been Christians a long time may have thought of it as an obscure word that you sang in a hymn, something like a diadem. Ebenezer is an obscure little word that appears only three times in the Bible, all three times in 1 Samuel, but is relevant to our daily lives. Twice it appears as a place name and once as the name of a standing stone. It was customary in Old Testament times, to raise standing stones as a memorial to significant events. For example the Israelites erected twelve stones (symbolic of the twelve tribes) after they crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land. After the Lord assisted the Israelites in defeating the Philistines in a fierce battle, Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far has the LORD helped us. 1 Samuel 7:12 NIV As you look back on your life, there will have been Ebenezer moments, times where Gods hand was undeniably with you, to guide you, bless you or protect you. As you seek to walk in His ways, there will be more and more Ebenezer moments. Until next time, may the story of your lifes journey be a testimony to the power of the Living God as shown by a life filled with Ebenezers. God bless. Kevin Dou you have a personal relationship with this God who blesses? If not email me and Ill share a few Bible verses that explain why it is important and a prayer that will make it possible. Let today be an Ebenezer moment as you accept Him as Lord of your life. To share your thoughts on this issue of Gleanings, or to share prayer concerns email us at corbin_writer@hotmail.com.
