GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #296 October 19, 2001 Imitators Our culture, like any other, has its share of heroes. Frequently, they are not great role models but are famous athletes, musicians or actors. It is always interesting to watch children and their heroes. The kids try and emulate their hero in every way. If it is an athlete who is the hero, the child wears the team jersey, preferably with the same number on it. They want the same shoes the hero wears. They want to attend the same school their hero went to. If you visit the childs room, chances are the walls are plastered with posters and photographs of the hero. Anything they can read about the hero is a must have. In every way they can, those children try and emulate their hero. Adults are not all that much different, although most try to be a little less obvious about their hero worship. They (whoever they really are) say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. When we try to be like someone else, it is usually because there is something about that person we admire. There is someone that Christians are called to imitate: Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV If someone looked at YOUR life, who would they see you imitating? Until next time, may Christ be the focus of your life. May you be a reflection of Him in everything you do and say. God bless. Kevin Are you tired of heroes who let you down, or of the emptiness the heroes cant seem to fill? Perhaps it is time to look to the hero that never falls, the one that can fill the emptiness. Turn to Jesus. Email me and Ill share a few Bible verses that explain why a relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible. Dont wait; this is the most important decision you will ever make. To share your thoughts on this issue of Gleanings, or to share prayer concerns email us at corbin_writer@hotmail.com.
