GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #293 October 16, 2001 Well Rooted I passed by a construction site the other day. The building had been completed and the landscaping crew was busy planting trees and laying sod. Alberta in October is a poor time for planting; the chances of the trees or grass surviving are limited at best. I suppose the contract called for the project to be completed by a given date, and the trees and grass were going in with no thought as to their long-term survival. They dug a hole, stuck the small trees in the hole, tied them to a stake to hold them up, watered them and hoped for the best. It will be interesting to see how many trees survive the coming winter. Without having chance to get rooted before the ground freezes, there isnt a lot of hope for them. Life is a lot like that sometimes, we kind of get stuck in someplace without ever having the opportunity to put down roots. It has become more so as our society becomes increasingly mobile and our lives become busier. To make up for our lack of rooting, we prop ourselves up to give us support. We turn to work, sex, drugs, alcohol, television, or anything else that makes us feel more stable in a world where instability is the rule. As Christians though, we neednt rely on those things, for even if weve just physically moved across the country or around the world, we have our roots established in great soil. So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7 NIV Our roots are in Christ. Our support, our nourishment is all in Him. There is no need to look to the things of the world to give us support. Until next time, may your roots in Christ run deep and strong. God bless. Kevin Are you just holding on and being propped up because you lack real roots? Perhaps its time to accept Christ and be rooted in the Creator of all things. Email me and Ill share a few Bible verses that explain why a relationship with Him is important and a prayer that will make it possible. Dont wait until your support system completely fails; get rooted in Christ today. To share your thoughts on this issue of Gleanings, or to share prayer concerns email us at corbin_writer@hotmail.com.
