GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #290 October 13, 2001 Clarity
I suffer from poor eyesight; I am nearsighted and have severe astigmatism. Without my glasses on, everything appears fuzzy. I cant drive or read without them. When I put my glasses on however, the world suddenly comes into focus and I can see. Where there were blurry shadows, there are now words, people and thousands of things I might otherwise not have seen. Sometimes in life, it seems that we are trying to make it without our glasses on. Our perspectives and priorities lack clarity. Everything seems to be blurry and we miss out on a lot of things we might otherwise have noticed. Its like that, when we neglect to spend time with God, and in His Word. We loose sight of what is really important and we begin to drift. The importance of time with the Word is repeated frequently in Scripture: Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8 NIV I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Psalm 119:15-16 NIV We sometimes try and take the easy way, and instead of reading and studying the Bible ourselves, we depend on what we hear on a Sunday morning. Then we wonder why we dont have a grasp on what the Bible says or what we believe. If you faithfully attended church every Sunday and the preacher included one new Bible verse in the sermon every Sunday, it would take more than 300 years for you to have heard the entire Bible. Its hard sometimes to be disciplined and spend time in the Word. Readers often write and share that theyve tried to read the Bible through and have given up. There are many plans of attack, and suggested ways to read the Word. If youre at a loss, check out the Bible reading plan at http://gleanings.jesusanswers.com. It lays out a systematic approach to reading the whole of the Bible in a year, in 15-minute daily increments. Learn more about who God is, how to live your life and who you are in the eyes of God, gain clarity for daily living. Spend time with the Word. Until next time, may you devote some of your time each day to His Word. God bless. Kevin If you are looking for clarity in your life, look first to a relationship with Jesus.
