GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #289 October 12, 2001 Taggers I sat at the crossing, waiting for what Im sure had to be the worlds longest freight train, to pass. As the boxcars rolled on endlessly, I began to be intrigued by the work of the taggers. Taggers are graffiti artists, with an unquenchable thirst to be known. They leave their work or tags on buildings, billboards, train cars and more. Often their work is an incredible eyesore and is a real problem for municipalities and businesses that have to pay to paint over it or clean it off. Train tags range from simple initials or phrases, to incredibly complex works of art. Im not sure how a tagger can spend the large number of hours it must take to paint an entire boxcar without being caught, but they seem to do it with regularity. The underlying problem with taggers is one that is rampant throughout our society. Its more than an incredible waste of talent, energy and money. It is the simple fact that, by and large taggers feel invisible and anonymous. They reach out through their achievements in an effort to be known and remembered. Taggers arent alone. People strive for achievement and fame through any number of avenues in a vain hope to escape the emptiness and loneliness of life, or to feel that they have a purpose for existing. The irony is that there is no need for anyone to feel empty when the creator of the entire universe wants to a have an intimate personal relationship with you forever. He builds a living, eternal temple from those who believe: As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:4-5 NIV When you are like the tagger and feeling invisible, and anonymous, or wondering why you are here, turn your thoughts heavenwards and seek out who God has made you to be. Until next time, may the mark you leave behind be the legacy of those to whom you have shared Jesus with. God bless. Kevin If you dont know Jesus, or dont have a relationship with Him, email me. Ill share a few Bible verses that talk about the importance of knowing Him and a prayer that will make that relationship possible. Leave your mark on eternity by accepting your place in it.
