GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 283 October 6, 2001 Books and Stories
Books are a passion of mine. There is something about the feel of a book that a computer screen will never be able to match. Ill read on many subjects, but my preference is books having to do with my faith. Stories about Christians. Tales of missionaries. Commentaries. Bible dictionaries. Treatises on theology. Books of old sermons. Hermeneutical handbooks. Whatever I can get my hands on. My favourite, is of course, the Bible. I spend some time in the Word every day. Sometimes, I will devote myself to reading nothing but the Bible. I spent all of August reading only the Word. There is a verse in Johns Gospel that always astounds me, Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. John 21:25 NIV I dont believe John is exaggerating at all. When you look at Jesus impact on the lives of the people He encountered, it is amazing. If each one of them wrote about how He touched their lives, what a library it would be. The Pharisees and Sanhedrin would have written about what a heretic and troublemaker He was. The woman at the well could have written volumes on the freedom of forgiveness. The 5000 He fed on the lakeshore would all have incredible stories to share. Those He healed would write about His miracles. Pilate could have written about what a disruptive influence He was or a dissertation on "What is truth". Imagine the impact if we all shared with others the way He has changed our lives. The answers to prayer. The comfort in times of distress. The healing. The forgiveness. The joy. Not all of us are called to write about those things, but we are called to tell the world. You dont have to be a writer, a theologian, a preacher; all you have to do is share your story. Tell people in your words, about your experience with Jesus. We may not fill the earth with our books, but we can tell the world about Jesus. Until next time, may you be given an opportunity to share your story with someone. God bless. Kevin
