GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 280 October 3, 2001 Prairie Pooches
Near my home is a small hill with a colony of gophers. Actually, they are Richardsons ground squirrels, but around here all of the ground squirrel family are called either gophers or prairie dogs. These prairie pooches live in vast networks of underground tunnels, which come out at holes in the ground all over the colony. The gophers use the holes to enter and exit the colony for feeding, or to sun themselves in relative safety. They are preyed upon by owls, hawks, eagles, coyotes, foxes and anything else that happens to be near enough to catch them. Because they are such a popular delicacy, they tend to be very timid and at the least sign of danger let out a warning whistle and dive back into the safety of the tunnels. It seemed to me the other day, that Christians and prairie pooches have a lot in common. We stay near the safety of other Christians, peeking our heads out of church now and then, squealing and hiding at the least sign of potential danger. What a different image of the church than what God envisioned. Two of the most common words spoken by God and His angels to man throughout the Bible were "Fear not". When Simon Peter acknowledged that Jesus was Christ, Jesus told him And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Matthew 16:18-19 NIV Were told not to fear and that the gates of hell will not withstand the church, yet we cower. Its time for us to recognize the power that Christ gave His bride, the church, and respond to his call to take the gospel and His love to the entire world. Its time we quit hiding in our holes. The outcome of the battle has already been determined (Ive read the book, the good guys win), so FEAR NOT and go forth. Until next time, may you be empowered by Holy Spirit to over come the fear of this world and be the bold messenger of the gospel Christ called you to be. God bless. Kevin
