GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 278 The Willows
On the shore of the lake where I walk my dog are a number of willow trees. They always seem to be the first to get new leaves and the last to lose them in the fall. They are less affected by drought than many of the trees around them, simply because they are rooted near the source of water. They are more resilient than the neighbouring trees because of where they are planted. Have you ever noticed that some people seem more resilient in tough times than others? No matter what the adversity, some people seem to find comfort and joy in their circumstances. Perhaps it is because of where they are rooted; This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD. He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit Jeremiah 17:5-8 Are you rooted in a trust of the Lord? Or are you trusting other people, your job, your financial safety net or one of a thousand other places susceptible to drought? If your trust is in Him, you can withstand any storm or drought. He will bring comfort, peace and joy. If you are trusting in something or someone else perhaps it is time to change your thinking. Until next time, may you be firmly rooted near the source of Living Water. God bless.
