GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #331 November 23, 2001 Icy Illusions
Most of the lake is frozen over now. The ice is not thick enough to walk on it is still thin enough to see through in many places. As I walked yesterday, I could see the trout swimming under the ice. They were oblivious to my presence. The ice made it seem like our worlds were separated, but it was an illusion. If I had wanted to, I could have pushed my hand through the ice and grabbed one. Only good judgement, common sense and a dislike of cold, wet hands kept me from trying just that. Our lives can be like that ice. We sometimes operate under the illusion that our daily "secular" world is somehow separate from the Christian world. There is no such thing as a secular job for a Christian. Secular implies without God, and wherever Christians are, God is there. It is impossible to separate us. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 NIV Even outside the walls of the church you are His ambassador, called to bring peace, reconciliation and hope. What kind of ambassador are you? Until next time, may you truly be an effective ambassador of Christ to everyone you meet. God bless.
