GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #329 November 21, 2001 Storm Sewers
The lone muskrat swam contentedly along the lakeshore. Every now and then it stopped to munch on some of the plentiful greenery. I wondered where it had come from. The lake is man made and sits in the middle of a busy suburban community. The odds of it having come overland without getting run over and killed seemed impossibly small. Then I remembered the storm drain system that flowed into and out of the lake. It must have come up through there. I thought about it swimming and walking through miles of dark storm sewer filled with debris and garbage that had washed in. The muskrat must have been very determined or very desperate to make the journey. It was worthwhile in the end though. A beautiful, safe lake with plenty to eat was the reward for making the journey. Our lives can feel like that muskrats journey. We can travel long periods of time in the darkened, garbage-strewn environment that life throws at us. The long-term reward for believers is even better than the lake was for the muskrat. We spend eternity with Jesus. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Revelation 22:1-5 NIV Believers have another advantage that the muskrat didnt have. We dont make the journey alone or in the dark. He is leading and lighting the way for us. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. 1 John 2:8 NIV Until next time, know that wherever you are at in life, you are loved, shielded, protected and not alone. In the storm sewers and even on a tranquil joyous lake, better things still lie ahead. God bless. Kevin Are you tired of fighting alone the currents and debris that life can throw at you?
