GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary ISSUE #319 November 11, 2002 SURRENDER
I'm writing on a different computer today, so bear with me and any formatting mistakes. I've traveled four hours to my parent's farm, and I'm using a different operating system and different word processor than normal. I came up to visit because I'll be doing the Remembrance Day message in my old home town. I haven't lived there for 25 years, but it's funny how the mind works. Anyone there who might remember me, will know the old pre-Christian Kevin, the one who was anything but a believer, and for a few moments that thought caused terror. What if they just thought about how I used to be, and made fun of my conversion? What if somehow my message got lost in thoughts based on my past? What if .....? Then I remembered that while my past forms part of who I have become, it is not who I am. I also realized that I'm not big enough to mess up all of God's plans. My job is to be obedient and go where He calls, do what He tells me and leave it up to Him. There is a lot of comfort and power in being powerless. Anything that happens will be by His power and not by mine. My part is to follow. Sometimes, we're called to do something that stretches us out of our comfort zone. Yet in that stretch He refines us, reshapes us and makes us more like Him. So, I did what the old song says and I surrendered all. He is the master, I'm the disciple and I just trust. The words from the book of Proverbs are familiar enough to be almost cliché, but for this trip they meant so much to me Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV When you find yourself in that spot of discomfort, simply trust. Until next time, may you truly surrender to the One in real control. God bless.
