GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #315 November 7, 2001 The Knock
Many Christians use the phrase "Ill pray for you" as a polite social filler, when they dont know what else to say. Yet prayer is designed to be so much more. It is a gift from God. It is a blessing and a responsibility to be able to talk one on one with Father. One verse that is often used in the context of the decision to make a choice to accept Jesus, is also applicable to prayer: Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 NIV He is ready, waiting to answer our prayers, to be with us and bless us, just waiting to be asked in. A less familiar verse from the Old Testament: Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. Isaiah 65:24 NIV Before we call on Him, He is already in action, just waiting for us to speak it. Hes knocking at the door; waiting for the prayers that He has already prepared an answer for. Im not saying that we get every little whim our heart desires, nor am I saying we get exactly the answer we want to our prayers. After all He is God and ultimately knows what is best. There have been many times, where in hindsight I have seen that the answer I wanted wasnt the best solution. I am saying that for those who will listen, He has answers beyond measure already prepared, just waiting for us to hear the knock and begin to pray. A family member in trouble, an unsaved friend, a call to ministry, how many opportunities are missed because we dont take the quiet time to listen for His gentle knock? Until next time, may you spend some time, listening for His knock and then responding to His prompting. God bless. Kevin Have you ever heard His knock, telling you that unconditional love and forgiveness are possible despite what life may have taught you to the contrary? Perhaps it is time to answer the door.
