GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #314 November 6, 2001 Overflow
The rain started gently enough, but quickly progressed to a downpour and continued for hours. Before long the gutters couldnt handle the volume and waterfalls started cascading off our roof. Water ran in sheets down the driveway, joining the river running down the street. All the dirt and debris washed downstream with it. Jesus made a promise before His crucifixion: On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. John 7:37:39 NIV It is also a promise for the future: Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Revelation 7:16-17 NIV Yet it is not just a future promise, it is for us today At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:3-7 NIV
Today, I simply want to offer you a blessing, may the living water flow over you. May it gently start, fill you to capacity, overflow you and run down the streets of your community like a river, transforming you and those around you in ways you never even imagined. God bless.
