GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #312 November 4, 2001 THIN ICE All around the lake by my home are huge signs warning of the dangers of thin ice. They are impossible to miss, but geese cant read. The ice is still very thin with a few small areas not froze at all. That doesnt leave much room for fifty to sixty ducks and a couple of hundred Canada geese. I stood and watched the flocks of geese come in and land yesterday. Some headed for the open water, but others tried landing on the ice. The usual grace of landing was lost as they slid, flapped and honked across the ice. Some managed to still look rather dignified, but many just looked silly. After landing many of them went strolling across the ice. The sound of cracking ice was louder with every step than the honking of the geese. Yet they seemed determined to tempt fate and walked around despite the danger. Every now and then, the ice would give way and one or two would find themselves swimming. People are like that. We flirt with all kinds of things despite clear warnings from Gods Word to avoid them. We seem to think that Gods warning isnt serious or somehow doesnt apply to us. An example is flirting with the occult. How many Christians read their horoscope, have their palms read ("just for fun, you know"), cast little spells, read tarot cards and more. From my experience the numbers are huge. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. Deuteronomy 18:10-13NIV As believers we are forgiven our sin, but we still are called to stay off the thin ice. Until next time, may the Lord convict you of any involvement in the occult and steer you away. God bless. Kevin Have you been dabbling in the so-called "black arts" looking for answers to life?
