GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #500 May 24, 2002 Aerial Acrobatics WOW, 500 daily Gleanings! Praise God! I wasnt sure I would be able to stay disciplined past the first week, but God has been faithful in providing the material. We started with three readers (including myself), now we have 3200+ daily subscribers and we go out to more than 27,000 people everyday through various lists and websites. Our best day has been just over 50,000 people. We started with 2 prayer partners (including me) and now have two prayer teams to handle requests and praise reports. If you are interested, we can always use more prayer cover (email me and Ill send you the details). Id like to thank each and every reader for your prayers. Thank you for sharing Gleanings with your friends and family. May the Lord richly bless each of you. Now, onto the real reason you are reading this page. As I walked around the lake the other day, I was treated to a rare sight of aerial acrobatics. It was a natural ballet in the air that I simply had to stop and watch for a while. The swallows have arrived. About a dozen of them were swooping back and forth across the lake, skimming just above the surface at times, catching whatever insects were coming off the lake. Swooping doesnt really do justice to their display. They were flying so fast that it was all I could do to keep any given bird in sight. They were up and down and cutting turns so tight that it would make any jet jockey jealous. I was standing in what seemed to be a turning lane, just a few feet back from the lakeshore. They would come off the lake at about the height of my head, make a tight turn within a foot or two of me, go around behind and be headed back out to the lake faster than I could turn my head. The sun glistened off their blue backs, making them look like little blue streaks of light flashing by. I could have stayed and watched them for hours, but my dog Genni grew bored. She had already waited long enough for me to stop and feed the ducks and geese. As we continued our walk, I marvelled at how quickly the swallows could move and respond to anything that might be an insect. They changed altitude and direction swiftly and seemingly without any effort. They also had the stamina to keep doing it over and over again. I thought about how wonderful it would be if I could respond as quickly to the nudging of Holy Spirit. Even when Im working hard on listening and being obedient, sometimes it takes me a while to catch on, stop what Im doing and change directions. It is a blessing that He is so patient with us. He sticks with me. Jesus guiding from the front, Holy Spirit from behind. So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess. Deuteronomy 5:32-33 NIV Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." Isaiah 30:21 NIV We may not be as swift as the swallow, or able to emulate their aerial acrobatics but we have strong guidance and if we follow it, we can perform a ballet of love with our lives. Until next time, "May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance." [2 Thessalonians 3:5 NIV] Be blessed today. Hallelu Yah Kevin Are you seeking guidance for your life? Are you in need of unconditional love, forgiveness and purpose? Do life leave you feeling vaguely unfulfilled? Look to a relationship with Christ for the answers Email me and Ill share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible. Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of: Dear God: I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord. Amen If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship. Did you know that at Gleanings, we have a dedicated team of prayer warriors and all prayer concerns are kept strictly confidential? Your comments, your questions and your joys are shared with the prayer team, to keep me accountable as the head of the ministry and to encourage them as they see God at work in your life.
