GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 498 May 22, 2002 Goslings The past couple of days as I walked around the lake, I’ve noticed that one pair of geese has two goslings with them. It’s early in the season, but I suspect that before long there will be many goslings and ducklings swimming around. I spent some time watching the goslings swim with their parents. They seemed so small, two tiny balls of yellow, downy fluff between a big pair of Canada geese. The goslings seemed to be so proud of their abilities to be out on the lake with their parents. I don’t think they had any idea how small they really were or how slow the parents were travelling on their journey. All they knew was they were out with their parents and felt safe as they explored the world. Watching that family of geese seemed a great analogy for the Christian walk. As believers we’re like the goslings. We make our way through life, pleased and proud to be exploring the world. Jesus in the lead and Holy Spirit coming up behind to keep us safe from things we don’t even see, let alone understand. Even when we think we’re going along, maturing in our faith at a blinding pace, Jesus and Holy Spirit aren’t even close to cruising speed yet. It’s okay though. It’s a good way to be making the journey, safely under the watchful and caring eyes of the Lord. We’re not perfect and we’re not better than other people, we’re just blessed enough to have accepted God’s protection and blessing. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
