GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #490 May 14, 2002 Let’s All Go Fly a Kite The sky was deep blue and a steady but not unpleasant breeze was blowing. The sort of day that reminded me of Mary Poppins singing, "Let’s go fly a kite. Up to the highest height. Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring. Up to the atmosphere. Up where the air is clear. Let‘s all go fly a kite." (Be blessed that you can’t hear me singing the song as I write). Sure enough, it wasn’t long before several people were out flying kites. There were a couple of simple, inexpensive colourful children’s kites; a homemade newspaper kite which seemed to keep breaking and a huge, commercially made, multicoloured dragon kite. I watched the kites swoop and dance across the sky at great heights. I envied them their freedom to dance in the heavens. As I watched and enjoyed their view, I realized their freedom was all an illusion. Someone on the ground pulling the strings controlled every move they made. They were also totally at the mercy of the winds. If the wind stopped, the kites would come crashing down. If the wind got too strong, the strings would break and the kites would blow for a while but eventually crash somewhere. People are like those kites. So many seem to dance with joy and have complete freedom, yet when all is said and done, they are in bondage to something. The freedom is only a facade. Some have their "freedom" in possessions, but a stock market crash or a fire can destroy all of that. Some have it in their physical beauty, but beauty can fade with time or be destroyed by disease or accident. Many have it supported by hidden sin. There is only one place to find true freedom, through faith in Christ. He frees us from the inside out. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 NIV Until next time, may you soar with the Spirit and know the true freedom that comes with Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
