GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #481 May 4, 2002

Troubleshooting

I spent some time yesterday tracking down a fault in the wiring in my home office. Some of you long term readers may remember that I blew it out when a paper clip dropped off my desk and managed to lodge between the prongs of a plug.

I’ve been using a long extension cord run to my power bar from a nearby room since them. I don’t like the look of it and it is far from a perfect set up but I’ve been procrastinating on fixing the problem because of the work involved.

As I was troubleshooting, my fears were confirmed when I found that somewhere between the electrical panel and the outlet, there is a break in the wire. It probably burnt through when the circuit shorted.

I thought about just running a new piece of wire along the wall in a desperate effort to avoid opening the sheet rock but I knew that wasn’t the right choice. I don’t mind opening the drywall itself so much as it is easy to fix. It’s emptying and moving every one of my bookcases to get to it.

I collect Christian books (particularly on missions) and my office is literally stacked to the ceiling. Early this coming week, I’m going to bite the bullet and actually fix the problem.

The sin in our lives can be like my electrical problem. We recognize that there is a problem, but we avoid dealing with it because we are managing despite the problem. Perhaps not as well as we would like, and sometimes it’s not very pretty but we get by.

We’re afraid to confront it because we know that means there is likely other baggage to deal with as well. There may be personal issues that have to be dealt with or amends that have to be made.

Like my electrical problem, the sin will not go away until it is fully dealt with.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.             I John 1:9-10 NIV

"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23-24 NIV

Until next time, may Holy Spirit prompt you to deal with the sin in your life and make whatever amends are required.

God bless.

Kevin

Are you running from God because you know your life has not been pleasing in His eyes? There is no need to run! Yes He wants you to deal with the issues, but He loves you and will accept you right where you are. God doesn’t expect you to be perfect before He comes into a relationship with you. He will not reject you when you come.

Email me and I’ll share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible.

Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of:

Dear God:

I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.

Amen

If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship.
