GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #442 March 14, 2002 Harmless Fun? Touch wood! Good luck! Harmless enough seeming statements that weve probably all used many times, but they are indicative of how deep superstition and occultism have been ingrained in the lives of even Christians. Break a mirror, walk under a ladder, see a black cat cross your path or spill some salt? We know what that means. How about "step on a crack"? Then there are the more obvious, checking your horoscope, using astrological signs to "know" about someones personality, having your fortune told or your tea leaves/palm read. There are séances, spells, ouija boards, tarot cards and more. To many believers these sorts of things seem like frivolity or harmless fun. God sees them differently: When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. Deuteronomy 18:9-13 NIV Detestable to the Lord! Thats pretty strong wording and not in the least ambivalent or vague. I think it means were supposed to stay away from the things of Satan. Have you been or are you involved in things detestable to the Lord? If so, it is time to stop and go to Him for forgiveness. Until next time, may you be blameless in the eyes of God. Hallelu Yah Kevin Have you been experimenting with the occult, seeking wisdom or personal power? Its time to stop and turn to the real source of power, Jesus. Email me and Ill share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible. Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of: Dear God: I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord. Amen If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship.
