GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #441 March 13, 2002

Squirrel Fight

The forest floor was littered with pine needles and pinecones. There seemed to be as many squirrels as there were pinecones. Okay, perhaps that’s a little exaggerated, but there were a fair number of squirrels.

I sat for a while and just watched them. Each was content to carry on its own business until it saw another squirrel. Then the war was on, the chattered at each other, each chastising the other for having the nerve to be in "their" forest. They chased each other and fought.

In reality, there was more than enough food to go around, and neither of them owned the forest. Several times, I noticed that while two fought, a third would often sneak in and begin eating where the first two had been.

It seems that people are not much smarter than squirrels. We fight and row over territory, even when there is a lot to go around. Even when the other guy has the same thing we do, we covet it.

We forget that we don’t own the earth either. God put us here a stewards (and we haven’t done a great job of that), He didn’t give us title to the place.

We want more and more, hoping it will satisfy. The only thing getting more does is gives us a bigger desire for more still.

When you look at all the problems caused by the desire to possess things and territory, it becomes easy to see why one of the commandments is:

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." Exodus 20:17 NIV

Now, I’m not saying it’s wrong to have things, or to want better from life, but we also need to keep our perspective in balance. In the long run, what’s going to matter more, a bigger house or a friend brought to know Jesus?

Until next time, may you be a good steward of the things He has provided and learn to be content with what you have.

Hallelu Yah.

Kevin

There is something far more valuable than all the things of this earth combined. That something is a personal relationship with the creator of the universe.

Email me and I’ll share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible.

Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of:

Dear God:

I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.

Amen

If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship.
