GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #430 March 2, 2002

An Itch

It was the big graduation parade for basic training. We stood under the blazing sun, at attention in full dress uniform in front of the whole camp and assembled guests.

My foot started to itch. Bending over to take off my boot and scratch my foot in the middle of the parade would have been a definite faux pas. The more I tried to ignore it, the more I though about it and the more it drove me crazy.

Have you ever had an itch you couldn’t scratch?

You know the one that starts as a little tiny annoyance that you try and ignore but it won’t go away. The more you try and ignore it, the more you think about it the more you "need" to scratch it.

You finally find an opportunity to scratch it and it itches all the more. Soon the itching or thought of it consumes you.

Sin is like that:

When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.  James 1:13-15 NIV

A thought becomes a desire, the desire a fascination and the fascination sin. The sin becomes an obsession. If you think sin is not an obsession, just try and stop.

The time to take it to the Lord is the moment of the thought, before it becomes action.

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV

Until next time, take those itching thoughts to the Lord and ask Him to intervene.

Hallelu Yah

Are you itching or obsessed by something that you know is not good? Have you gone so far down the path that you think there is no hope of quitting, or no way you can ever be forgiven? There is a place you can turn. Look to Jesus.

Email me and I’ll share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible.

Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of:

Dear God:

I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.

Amen

If you pray this prayer let me know and I will direct you to some free non-denominational resources that will help you grow in that newfound relationship.
