GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #531 June 27, 2002  Words of wonder

I sat on the deck overlooking the mountaintop lake. The sun shone on my face, and I closed my eyes listening to a worship cd on my no-name personal stereo system.

It felt so good to just sit there and hear songs of praise. As I sat listening, storm clouds formed on nearby mountains. Every now and then, the sky was filled with the rolling echo of thunderclaps. Sometimes the thunder seemed to go on almost forever. Despite the thunder, the sun still shone where I was sitting.

It felt as if God was displaying his glory for me. The warmth of the sun as I listened to words of praise showed His loving and intimate side. The rolling thunder that filled the mountains reminded me of His awesome power.

In so many ways, He is too much for us to ever comprehend. I try to come up with the words that express my wonder at who He is and what He has done and I fail. Awesome? Overused. Incredible? Not nearly big enough. Wonderful? Powerful? Magnificent?  He’s more than that. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? Fun word, but not enough reverence.

The Bible writers had the same problem. There are so many names and expressions used to describe God, His character His and attributes that a person could spend a lifetime studying them all and still not get a full understanding.

I think I’ll just have to settle for God. He is God. A simple word, but somehow in it is contained all the wonder and magnificence that we comprehend.

He’s wonderful, He’s God now when we can’t even begin to see all of His glory. What words will we use we see Him face to face?

Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 1 Corinthians 3:12 NIV

It’s no wonder we’ll spend eternity with Him, it will take that long to come up with words to describe His love and His power. It will take that long to express my gratitude that He knows me and He cares.

Until next time, may words of praise and wonder fill your lips.

Hallelu Yah
