GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue # 528 June 24, 2002   Control

Every day I see more and more moms running, pushing the three wheeled baby strollers. You know the ones; they have wheels like bicycles and are pushed along with ease unlike the traditional stroller or baby buggy with its small cumbersome wheels.

I saw one for a toddler the other day. Mom had fixed a "steering wheel" to the bar and the boy was busy driving as his mom pushed the stroller.

Of course, the child had no idea that all his twisting and turning of the wheel had no impact on where he was going. He simply had an illusion of control. Mom decided where and when they would both go and stop.

As adults, we’re not much different than the boy behind the wheel. We steadfastly refuse to turn to God because we haste to give up control. We want to be in charge.

The irony is that like the boy in the stroller, we really have no control, simply an illusion of control. Even the most determined self-made man or woman really has no great level of control.

They can’t change the weather, the time, or what happens in the world around them. They can’t control the stock markets or what happens in the Middle East. They can’t stop events like September 11th from happening. They can’t control the moment of their birth or the moment of their death.

As much as we desire control, and will do virtually anything to hang onto that control, it’s all an illusion. There is only one person in control, God.

Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you. For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Philippians 3:17-21 NIV

There is ultimately only one thing we can control. Will we surrender our lives to Jesus and spend eternity in heaven with Him, or will we reject Him and spend eternity in hell separated from Him?

Have you acknowledged His control over your life? If so rejoice, because when you surrendered to Him, you gave up nothing but illusions and gained so much in return.

Be blessed.

Hallelu Yah
