Issue #526 June 22, 2002 Weak and needy people When I first became a Christian, I was confronted with a little guilt. I had grown up believing that only weak and needy people turned to "religion." I struggled with that a lot, and came up with all kinds of witty responses to statements about weak and needy people. Eventually I came to terms with the fact that it was true. Only weak and needy people need Christ. I also realized that all people are weak and needy, some just don’t know it. We all are in need of forgiveness. The "nicest" person has something in the dark corners of their memory that they need forgiveness for, or has someone they need to forgive. We all need love and companionship. We all have fears. We all have some struggle in our lives that we can’t overcome under our own strength that makes all of us weak in some area. People have physical needs, spiritual needs, psychological needs and spiritual needs. None of us is immune to the disease known as neediness or weakness. Street people have needs and weaknesses, fortune 500 CEO’s have needs and weaknesses and so does everyone in between. Need and weakness isn’t a respecter of race, gender, social status or any other demarcation, they affect everyone. I am no longer embarrassed to be thought of as week or needy. I’m in great company because I know you are too. I praise God for being there in my times of weakness and need, it means I don’t have to deal with them alone or hide them anymore. To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 NIV Until next time, delight in your weakness because in it, Christ is with you. Be blessed.
