Issue # 525 June 21, 2002 Poisoned Springs During our recent trip to British Columbia we passed many springs gushing out of the side of the mountains. There was a point in time where you felt safe drinking from many of the springs in both Alberta and BC, but not any more. Many of them have been contaminated from various sources and your never know what goodies you might be ingesting. The once free flowing places of refreshment and now poisoned springs The same has happened in many churches. Jesus Christ offers springs of Living Water but the teachings of many have poisoned the spring and made them not safe to drink from. There are pseudo-Christian cults like Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses who have corrupted the Gospel. There are many line denominations that deny the deity of Christ, the existence of absolute truth and the truth of the Bible. Even within solid Bible believing churches there are those who would corrupt the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is often twisted to be a gospel of works and earning your salvation instead of salvation by grace as promised in the Scriptures. The Bible warned that this would happen. But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping 2 Peter 2:1-3 NIV There is a heavy price for these false prophets to pay I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! Galations 1:6-9 NIV How do we know the spring of living water from the poisoned spring? We go to the Word, study it and meditate on it. We compare the whole of Scripture not just verses that were used to make a point. The Word is the benchmark against which all teaching (including mine) needs to be applied.
