GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life
Issue# 520 June 13, 2002 Voted Off? I watched a television show from Britain the other night that was a bit of a refreshing change of pace. It is a short series on a group of 17 people who agreed to give up modern conveniences and live as a tribe of Iron Age Celts might have some 2500 years ago. There are a few modern day safety precautions taken and a camera crew around at all times, but none the less, it seems to be a semi-realistic depiction of what some of the details of ordinary life would have been in those days. I found it to be a change of pace because the popular "survival" type shows focus on the goal of getting rid of members until a winner emerges. In this program, the goal is to learn to work together and survive as a community. I know the producers have carefully screened these people and planned activities to create the necessary friction in the group to give the show a little tension, but I much prefer watching people at least trying to work towards a common goal. There are some characters that are easy to like and some others that I took an instant dislike to, but life is like that, you usually dont get to choose the people in your community. The world in general has increasingly become like the survivor shows I dont like. Every person looks out for his/herself. What a portrait of opposition to everything Jesus taught. Our Lord didnt return to "look out for number one." He was already number one when He came, but He gave that up for us. Jesus called them [the disciples] together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave -- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matthew 20:25-28 Somehow, I cant see Jesus standing there and voting a disciple "off the island." What about you? Are you focusing on service and community building in the name of Christ or are you looking out for yourself, trying to be number one and claw your way to the top of the pile? Until next time, my prayer is that you take a hard look at your life and begin to make the changes to the servant lifestyle that Jesus called us to live. Be blessed. Hallelu Yah Kevin Are you tired of the constant battle to get to, or stay on top? Are you wondering if that is all there is to life? Let me assure you there is something far better. Email me and Ill share some Bible verses that explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible Or simply begin the relationship by saying a prayer along the lines of: Dear God: I have made many mistakes in my life and done things I am not proud of. I need your love and forgiveness. I believe that you came into this world and gave your life on a cross to pay for my sins and that you defeated death and rose again. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.
