The picnic

Yesterday was our church picnic. After worship service we enjoyed a great meal together then some of us headed off to a nearby park for games.

There were relay races, contests and many forms of simple fun. The weather was perfect, warm, but not too hot.

It was a joy to watch kids and adults alike madly trying to blow bubbles in the bubble gum blowing contest. Watching the four-legged race (like a three legged race but with another person tied in) was good for some laughs, especially when the finalists ran with the two outside people blindfolded.

 I think the thing that struck me the most was people’s sheer joy and delight in simple things. The competition was in fun, with competitors urging one another on. People rejoiced and laughed regardless of winning or losing.

Our world has lost so much of that simplicity. If we’re going to compete we have to win (I’ve been guilty of that one a lot). We want to be entertained not participants. We want high tech, expensive fun, not simple inexpensive games.

We’ve lost the simple art of being content in our circumstances.

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want  Philippians 4:11-12 NIV

What is the secret?

I can do everything through him who gives me strength  Philippians 4:13 NIV

The secret is in developing your relationship with Christ. It isn’t in superficial Sunday attendance or nominal Christianity. It lies in truly giving your life over to Him and serving in love. It is in trusting Him to provide whatever you need for the task at hand.

Abiding in Him is the source of contentment.
