GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life
Issue #508 June 1, 2002 Of the Internet and Feet On the wall in my office is a map of the world. In it are stuck a myriad of red and black pins. Black pins represent countries where I know someone has read Gleanings. Red pins represent countries where my family and I have supported a missionary at some point. At first glance, it looks kind of impressive. God has blessed Gleanings and we have taken the Word to almost 60 countries. (If you live outside of Canada or the US, drop me a quick email and tell me what country you live in and I’ll add it to the wall if it’s not already there) Then I remembered a quote I heard on television last year. The speaker, an eminent Canadian scientist, said that 80% of the world’s population has never even used a telephone. Now I don’t know how accurate that number is, or how it was derived, so I simply use it for what it’s worth. That means that as many people as the net reaches (or has the potential to reach), they still only represent 1/5 of the people of the world. On top of that, most Internet traffic is in English. What about those who don’t have English as a language? So what’s my point? I guess it’s twofold: 1) The very fact that you can receive this message (whether you agree with it or not) makes you among the wealthiest and most technologically advanced people in the world. No matter what your circumstances, you have been blessed by God. 2) All of us still have much work to do to take the good news of Jesus Christ into a hurting world. Go if you can go. Send if you can’t go. Pray for those who do go. All of us have a role to play in reaching the world. How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" Romans 10:14-15 NIV Until next time, Praise God for the blessings of having the Word in your life and ask Him how you can do your part to get beautiful feet. Be blessed today with the pleroma (fullness) of God. Please forgive me, and be the Lord of my life. I give my life to you Lord.
