GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 184 June 30, 2001 REVERENCE Two of my passions are Jesus, and books about Christianity. I love to read, and if it has to do with my faith that is a bonus. I dont think either of those passions are a surprise to you regular readers, because they are topics that come up a lot. Im not a collector in that I dont have to buy books in pristine condition. Im a reader who accumulates books. I frequently buy things that serious collectors would turn their noses up at, but suit my needs because they are in readable condition. I hate to see any good Christian book be destroyed. If I could afford too, I think I would buy a copy of every one of them I found and rescue them, saving them for posterity. I love to wander through the book department of thrift stores and go to garage sales picking up bargain Christian titles. I especially like it when I come across solid Christian books from the period up to the late 1940s, for less than a dollar. What I like about the books from the mid 1800s to the late 1940s is that the authors seem to have a deep understanding of who God is and a real sense of reverence for Him. Im not much for formality, in worship or prayer. Im not a suit and tie guy unless Im behind a pulpit. I like contemporary worship choruses instead of hymns, but I miss a sense of reverence for God. Im not sure how I miss it I didnt really even begin to experience it until a few years ago. I didnt grow up with it, and in a lot of ways it seems to me to be absent from churches today. We hear lots about the love. mercy and grace of God. Those are all wonderful things, each of which Im thankful for daily. We seldom hear about Gods wrath or the importance of holiness. I think about Him as my abba (father/daddy) God, but He is also the same God who spoke the world into being, and the master of eternity. He is God. The Old testament is full of a sense of reverence for God. Indeed, our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. Psalm 69:18 NIV Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy. Psalm 99:5 NIV Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice Psalm 105:3 NIV. Take some time today to reflect reverently on the Holy God we serve. Until next time, may you be blessed by the presence of a God who is not only friendly and approachable, but one who is also holy, and powerful. God bless. Kevin If you have never met this God who is both friendly and Holy, email me. Ill introduce you to Him, by sharing a few words from His Bible that explain why a relationship with Him is important. Ill also share a prayer that will make it possible. God has the power to change your life, forgive your past mistakes and He desires deeply the opportunity to know you. Will you let Him? © 2001 K.F.
