GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 181 June 27, 2001 CLUTTER
Were in the early stages of looking for a new home. As part of our ongoing efforts to simplify life and concentrate on the important things, we have decided to look for a small condominium and sell our house. Weve been in this house for thirteen years. Being ex-military and an ex-banker, that is the longest we have lived any where by a huge margin. In thirteen years, you accumulate a lot of stuff. Weve been cleaning out things for a couple of weeks now and are slowly making progress. In the workshop were all kinds of wondrous projects that never got past the idea stage and things I had accumulated over the years with plans of fixing them. Miscellaneous parts and broken bits that might come in handy. Pieces of wood too small to do anything with, but too large to throw away. In various rooms was enough unused furniture to furnish a small apartment. Baby furniture (our youngest turns fourteen in a couple of weeks) filled the storage room. Closets stuffed with clothes that hadnt been worn in years, but that somehow managed to evade our periodic trips to the Salvation Army drop off depot. All things that were good in their own way, and seemed worth hanging onto. In reality, just clutter that we never got around to dealing with. Our lives can become just as badly cluttered. We allow junk to pile up in our daily schedules that we dont even notice anymore. Hours in front of the television, simply because its on. Stacks of trashy novels we have read because we didnt have time to read the Bible. Nasty little habits, that we feel guilty about, but dont really have the self discipline to deal with. Things we know we need to do but weve procrastinated on them so long that have become our constant mental companion. Weve put so many things off that the task of dealing with them seems insurmountable. Not all the things that clutter our lives are bad things. Committees we sit on simply because no one else will. Programs at church that we do just because weve always done them. Many can be good things in and of themselves. If they are not what God wants us to be doing, or they are keeping us from Him, then they too are clutter. We so busy with our cluttered little lives that we leave God out. Yet Scripture tells us He is to be first. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33 NIV Jesus replied: " `Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40 NIV Perhaps its time for each of us to examine our lives to see what is really important. Until next time, may you strip away the clutter and spend time with God. God bless.
