GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue # 177 June 23, 2001

COOL, REFRESHING WATER

The truck was broken down. Again. It was about three miles to town and it was hot.

The normally busy road was empty. No traffic, no birds, no signs of life. Every living think seemed to have gone to hide from the sun. Even the trees and grass wilted under the relentless heat of the sun. The stillness was eerie.

Waves of heat bounced off the asphalt, like streams of water moving just out of my reach. Teasing, tantalizing, reminding me of just how hot and thirsty I was.

Every step was an effort. The three miles seemed like thirty, but finally, I was there.

My first stop, the local store, and I bought two of the biggest bottles of water they had. I guzzled them down greedily. Suddenly, I was refreshed and cooling off. My thirst faded. The whole world became a livelier, brighter, friendlier place.

All because of a drink of water.

In most of Canada, we take the availability of fresh drinking water for granted. Very seldom, and even then no more than for a couple of hours, have I not had plenty of water to drink on demand.

The people of the middle east are familiar with what it is like to be thirsty. They are aware from personal experience, how priceless a commodity water is.

They know how refreshing a cold drink of water can be on a hot day.

One of the most common biblical metaphors for the love of God is water or living water.

In that day you will say: "I will praise you, O LORD. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me.

Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation."

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

Isaiah 12:1-3 NIV

Imagine yourself the hottest and most thirsty you have ever been. Now picture the refreshment of a cold glass of water.

That refreshment is nothing compared to the  refreshment from the well of salvation. His living water refreshes you in a way that nothing else ever will.

Until next time, may you experience of the joy of drinking from the well of the Lord.

God bless.

Kevin

If you have never had a drink from the well of living water email me. I’ll share a few Bible verses about why a relationship with God is important and a prayer that will make it possible.

Come, let your thirst for love, forgiveness and acceptance be eternally satisfied with His living water.
