GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #170 June 16, 2001 PEACE AND JOY
I talked with a man in his early to mid twenties last night. He had grown up going to church on Sundays with his family and remained faithful to that even when he moved out. He shared with me that the Sunday church experience was comfortable, but ritualistic and in many ways empty. His religion was for a short period of time on Sundays and the rest of his week was separate from his church life. It wasnt until two years ago that he found out what was missing. In all the time he had attended church, he had never been told about having a personal relationship with Jesus. Once he found that was possible and gave his life over to Christ, he was a work in transformation. He talked of peace and hope. He spoke of feeling the presence of God in everyday life and of the explosion of joy in his heart when he found Jesus. His heart and life were transformed enough that he spends much of his time sharing the truth about Jesus with people. He knows how grey and black life was before he came to faith and how much more vibrant it is now. In many ways, he seemed a shy young man, but when he spoke of the love of Jesus, he changed. He sat upright, his face lit up and he became very animated. You could feel the love for the Lord broadcast from him. That young man knows my Jesus. The Lord of life, not empty meaningless ritual and religion. The Lord of joy, peace and hope. The Jesus spoken of by the prophet Isaiah For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 NIV The Jesus of spoken in the book of Acts You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' ACTS 2:28 NIV
If this is the Jesus you know, spend some time in quiet prayer and thanksgiving for you are a person who has been truly blessed by God, regardless of your circumstances. Until next time, May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:23 NIV)
God bless.
Kevin
