GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 169 June 15, 2001 As For Me...
Last night, my wife and I attended the local premiere of the video TRANSFORMATIONS II, The Glory Spreads. It follows on the heels of the original TRANSFORMATIONS video, released two years ago, which documents the radical changes is four communities that God has been at work in. The video is well documented and shows the awesome power of God to change whole communities. I wont tell you the details, see it when it becomes available in your community. One of the scenes that hit home with me, was when a community in the Canadian Arctic over the course of several days gathered for destruction their drugs, pornography and other impediments to a godly life. To dispose of it they had a bonfire. Over $80,000 worth of materials from a community of under 500 people. This was not a forced edict, this was a community whose heart was changed. They took to heart the choice laid out in Joshua: "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:14-15 NIV There are other instances in Scripture of transformed communities destroying the things of their lives with ungodly ties. The book of Acts records a similar happening at Ephesus A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. ACTS 19:19-20 NIV Seeing the community destroy the things that were not of God made me wince a little, because it took me years to do that. I gave them up little by little. Each of them tugged at my heart and I withheld them from God. I wanted God, but I wanted to enjoy an ungodly lifestyle at the same time. Eventually I chose Him and have never regretted it. What are you holding back in your life, hanging onto it, while still seeking God? Drugs, alcohol, sex outside of marriage, pornography, violent movies and books? Perhaps it is time you gave up those things and gave yourself over to God. We complain that He doesnt show us His will for our lives. Part of His will is for us to give up the things that dont bring glory to His name. Until next time, may you seek to remove the stumbling blocks in your life and give yourself fully to God.
