GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 166 June 12, 2001 Whats in a name? One of the old catechisms of many Christian churches asks the question What is the chief end of man? The answer is Mans chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. If enjoying God is one of the reasons that we exist, it seems logical to me that we should know Him. This idea is often reinforced in Scripture: When Jesus prayed for his disciples, He prayed Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" John 17:3 NIV One of the apostle Pauls greatest goals was: I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, Philippians 3:10a NIV One of the ways to know God a little better, is to spend some time in considering His character as it is revealed in His name. The English language is woefully inadequate in describing God, and we often miss the fullness of the original languages. If you asked the average Christian (is there such a thing? to give you the names of God, you would get, God, Jesus, Christ, and Holy Spirit. Some would give you Yahweh (or Jehovah) and a few might give you Jehovah-Jireh because of the popular worship song. But the names and titles of God are so much more than just names. In the ancient middle east (and many other cultures, a persons name told you something important about them. A full study of all the names of God, is a huge undertaking, any many books have been written on the subject. For today, well just have to be content with looking at a few: Jehovah-jireh God who provides Jehovah-tsidkenu God our righteousness Jehovah-shalom God our peace Jehovah-elohaythe Lord my God Jehovah-rohithe Lord is my shepherd Jehovah-nissithe Lord our banner El-shaddaialmighty, all sufficient God El-roithe God that sees El-olamthe God of eternity AdoniLord Adoni-jahJehovah is Lord JahI am Jehovaheternal, ever-loving one
This list doesnt begin to consider some of the other names you may have begun to think of, Messiah, Prince of Peace, Comforter, Morning Star, Lamb of God, Abba. Get to know Him, spend some time contemplating who he is. There can be a lot in a name. Until next time, may you get to know Him a little better each day. God bless. Kevin If you dont know this God I have been talking about, but would like to, email me. Ill share a few Bible passages that will explain why a relationship with Him is important and a prayer that will make it possible. He is the most significant person you will ever meet. © 2001 K.F.
