GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 214 July 30, 2001 STAND FIRM
I like magpies, but in this area they have become so numerous that they are rapidly becoming a nuisance. They tend to be very aggressive and drive away many of the other species of birds that live in the neighbourhood. They will frequently gang up on other birds, or even cats and dogs and drive them away. The larger animal will often flee in terror because of the constant harassment, even though it is stronger and could chase away or kill the magpies if it tried. The other day, when driving back from the lake, I saw a scene I was quite familiar with. A large hawk or an owl was sitting in a tree being harassed by a flock of magpies. As long as it sat there and stood its ground (so to speak), there was nothing the magpies could do but make a nuisance of themselves. Our lives are often like that. Troubles besiege us and we become overwhelmed. We give up or flee in desperation, when all we need do is stand our ground. A favourite tool of Satan to reduce the effectiveness of Christians is to beset them with constant problems. We lose our confidence, and either run away or lash out in a non-Christ-like way, reducing the power of our testimony. Scripture tells us to stand firm in our faith, to be grounded in God. Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still Exodus 14:13-14 NIV Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. PSALM 20:7-8 NIV Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 NIV He equips us to stand our ground Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. Ephesians 6:11-18 NIV Until next time, when confronted with the difficulties of life, may you stand your ground, anchored strongly in Jesus. God Bless. Kevin If you are struggling in life without an anchor and unable to stand, email me. Ill introduce you to Jesus.
