GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 208 July 24, 2001 Foolishness? When we visited the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village recently, one of the role players made an observation that was quite profound. (For those who are new subscribers, the Ukrainian Village is a living heritage museum, located close to my home. It celebrates the contribution of Ukrainian pioneers to Alberta and recreates several different eras. Each building has role players who are trained to play the people who lived in the buildings at the time.) While we toured an early 1900 Ukrainian Canadian farmstead we noticed that there were various icons on the eastern wall. That is typical for Byzantine Christians, but in another room there was a simple cross painted on the west wall. It was something I had not seen before. My wife was curious about it as well, and asked the lady of the house if there was any special significance to it. She replied, Its to ask God for His blessing on our home. Kathy asked Does everyone have one in their home? Only those who believe in God and go to church. People who dont believe in God, well I dont know any, that would just be foolish. What a refreshing answer. There was a point in time in my life where I didnt believe in God and in looking back, I think it took far more faith not to believe than to believe. The evidence of God is apparent in all creation for those who will only open their eyes and look. You cannot scientifically prove or disprove the existence of God. You carefully weigh the evidence and accept one position or another on faith. The Scriptures are uncommonly blunt about the issue of Gods existence; The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." Psalm 53:1a NIV The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left. Ecclesiastes 10:2 (In Jewish metaphor, to turn to the right was to move towards God, to turn left was to move away). I cannot prove beyond a doubt the existence of a loving God, but I know from the transformation of my life, the lives of others, and the specific answers to more prayers than I can recall that He is real. He does care. Until next time, may you take the time to reflect on the overwhelming evidence for His existence. God bless. Kevin If you have never known Jesus, but would like to, simply email me. Ill share a few Bible verses that will explain why a relationship with Him is important. Ill also share a brief prayer that will make it possible. Wisdom or foolishness? Your choice. © 2001 K.F.
