GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 207 July 23, 2001 ONE WAY STREET On Saturday, my youngest son was off with his youth group to see the Edmonton Trappers baseball team play, followed by a concert from a Christian band. When we arrived at the church just before 6:00 p.m. to drop him off, we found there had been some confusion over times. They were to meet at 5:00 p.m. with the game starting at 6:00. One of the parents had left Kyles ticket for him in the church mailbox. We rushed downtown to get to the game. Nearing the stadium, I made a left turn and found myself facing five lanes of oncoming traffic. I had turned onto a one way street. Fortunately I had the time and space to make a quick U-turn, as traffic was held up by policemen to allow for people crossing the street to the ball game. No harm was done, other than my pride. I have driven past that corner, literally thousands of times. I know it is a one way street, it is well signed as a one way. Yet, in a moment, I went ahead without thinking and found myself in a potentially dangerous spot. Life can be like that. Were traveling merrily along our way, and in an instant we do something really stupid and find ourselves in a bind. We say something we shouldnt have said or give into a temptation we know better than to give in to. All without meaning to, just because we didnt take a moment to think. Like the line of people who were holding up traffic and kept me safe, God always provides us an out from temptation: No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV If we do slip, he does allow us a way back and promises forgiveness. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. 1 John 1:9-10 NIV Until next time, may you be vigilant about turning the wrong way, and quick to turn back if you slip. God bless. Kevin If you have never known the forgiveness of God for the mistakes you have made, please email me. Ill share a few Bible verses that will explain why a personal relationship with Jesus is so important and a prayer that will make it possible. Be turned back onto the right road today, no matter how far down the wrong road you have traveled. He is waiting for you. © 2001 K.F. "Kevin" Corbin All Rights Reserved |
