GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 200 July 16, 2001 A Good Shower
I laughed when I saw a little cartoon called The Coast in the local paper yesterday. It showed a very scruffy and obviously smelly man walking along and being stopped by two policeman. His comment, Derelict Bum? No, Ive just been with six buddies in a fishing camp for two weeks. As a fisherman, I can relate. Even by the end of one day's fishing, Ive loaded and unloaded the boat, loaded and unloaded the gear, and sat in the sun for hours. Im usually not particularly fresh when I get home. If its a weekend retreat with no showers available, chances are I havent shaved and you can add the pungent aroma of a fire into the mix. I dont notice it at the time, but by the time I get home, and get the stuff put away, I'm very aware of it. The very first thing I want is a good shower and a shave. After that I feel clean and refreshed, then I give my wife a kiss. There is no point in torturing her too much, I know she loves me, but I wouldnt want to kiss myself either when I first get home. Just to feel clean and refreshed is such a blessing. It is like that in our daily lives as well. The little sin and debris creeps up on us and before we know it, we feel dirty and smelly. We can ignore it for a while, but soon it becomes unbearable or worse yet, we become so accustomed to it that we dont even notice anymore. We need a good spiritual shower to cleanse us and make us clean again. Fortunately, we serve a God who understands our need to be made clean again and gave us Jesus to be the way. let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful Hebrews 19:22-23 NIV
We also need to remember what it feels like to be cleansed and made fresh and new again when someone comes to us for forgiveness. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13 NIV
Until next time, may you turn to God and be blessed with a fresh shower of love and forgiveness. God bless. Kevin Do you carry around the burdens of your life? Are there things that make you feel dirty and in need of deep down cleaning? Take them to Jesus. If you want to have a relationship with Jesus and experience true forgiveness, email me. Ill share a few Bible verses that will explain why it is necessary and a prayer that will make it possible. Be made clean today.
