GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 199 July 15, 2001 Sabbath Rest I wrote recently about visiting the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, a living museum celebrating the heritage of some of Albertas Ukrainian pioneers. We returned yesterday for another visit. Its never the same twice, because the role-players may be different and depending on the day and season, they will be acting out different parts of their ordinary lives. The role players model life based on actual characters and historical situations. Yesterday, in each home, the wives were preparing the meal for the day. They were also preparing the meal for the next day. They were planning ahead to allow for the Sabbath day. No work was to be done on the Sabbath, except for milking cows, which must be done daily for the health of the cow. There was no sense of legalism, it was simply a matter of life, the Sabbath was to be set aside. For these people, the Sabbath would mean traveling to the nearest Ukrainian Orthodox church [or other orthodox church if there was not a Ukrainian one nearby] for prayer and worship. The keeping of the Sabbath seems to be largely a forgotten commandment these days. There is a group of Christians (some would argue a Christian sect or a cult) who rigorously and legalistically keep the Saturday as Sabbath. I disagree with their theology on the subject, but I admire their devotion. I dont agree that the Sabbath day must be Saturday, but I do believe that God considered a time of rest important enough to mandate it in His law. We see it from the beginning of Genesis, where God rested on the seventh day By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. Genesis 2:2-3 NIV
Echoed in the ten commandments "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." EXODUS 20:8-11 NIV
Were reminded in the New Testament There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest Hebrews 4:9-11a NIV Your day to be set apart for the Lord may or may not be Sunday. Since Sunday is our traditional worship day, in our home, we try to observe Sunday as Sabbath. Were intentional about it, but not rigidly legalistic either. Assuming you have chosen Sunday to be your Sabbath, what is on your agenda today? Until next time, may you make the time to enter into the rest of God. God bless. Kevin © 2001 K.F.
