GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 198 July 14, 2001 CLOUDED VISION
Driving home along from the lake the other evening, the windshield of the van collected the usual number of dead insects. Butterflies, wasps, bees, grasshoppers and a vast assortment of other small, unidentifiable bugs littered the glass. As long as it was daylight, the bugs were nothing more than a minor nuisance. I hardly even noticed them. Dusk began to roll in quickly. Before long, there were so many bugs that the windshield wipers couldnt scrape them all off, even with generous applications of washer fluid. All the wipers did was smear them around some. I could still see, but it was more of a nuisance than before. Then, headlights started to become necessary. The debris on the windshield quickly became much more than a nuisance. It became dangerous. It distorted the lights of oncoming traffic, making visibility limited and the risk of an accident much higher. Sin can be like those bugs. At first we hardly notice, but soon we start to give in a little and before long our efforts to clean up just end up smearing and making things worse. Before we know it, even the light coming towards us is distorted and we are in great danger. We cant avoid all sin and temptation, it surrounds us. Were bound to gather some debris. We need to turn to the Lord frequently and have our vision cleared. Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live! EZEKIEL 18:30-34 NIV Until next time, may your windshield be clean of debris and may your vision for God remain unclouded. God bless.
