GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 196 July 12, 2001 The Foundation
The community I live in is a typical growing suburban community. Its growing fast. Some say too fast. The retail and industrial areas are growing and are overtaking areas that were once home to small farms and acreages. As I drove along one of the streets where the acreage to retail strip transition is happening, I saw what had once been a home. No, thats not accurate, I didnt see what used to be a home, all that was left was the foundation. The house itself had been demolished or moved. Im sure the foundation will soon be gone as well, but it outlasted the house. Last year the was a big commotion in Edmonton, the city we border. Several very expensive houses, foundations and all were sliding off a cliff into a nearby river. It seems that the foundations were not appropriately anchored for the terrain and as the soil on the cliff shifted with the rain, it was taking the houses with it. I began to have a deeper appreciation for the biblical metaphor of a foundation. Some foundations dont hold up. Some last after the building itself is gone. What foundation are you building your life on? A foundation of education? Career? Family? Wealth? Fame? All of theme are transitory and can be gone in a moment. An education can become dated. A career can stall. Families can fall apart. Stock markets crash and fame is fickle. The one foundation that never changes is God himself. "Why do you call me, `Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." Luke 6:46-49 NIV When trouble hits your life, when you find yourself confronted with the habitual sins you hate in yourself or when you are lying in bed late and night and wondering about life, will your foundation support you? Until next time, may you find yourself anchored solidly on the foundation of the love, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ himself. God bless. Kevin If you feel like you have a shaky foundation and would like to know more about Jesus, please email me. Ill share a few bible verses about why knowing Him is possible and a prayer that will set Him as your foundation. Dont wait for it to all fall apart, anchor yourself to Him today. © 2001 K.F.
