GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 191 July 07, 2001 Blue Butterflies   As I walked my dog Genni yesterday, I saw a pair of butterflies. Nothing really unusual in that, I frequently see a variety of butterflies and moths (sometimes I can’t tell the difference) taking advantage of the warm summer weather. These two butterflies were no larger than the end of my thumb. As they flew together, they seemed oblivious to the world around them. They were a delightful shade of blue. I’ll call it powder blue, but the truth is, it is a shade I really don’t have words to describe. I was struck by the fact that butterflies, like flowers, seem to come in a virtually infinite number of sizes and colors. They are a simple creature, but in truth are incredibly, intricately designed. I pondered the artistry of a God who would invest the energy to make something as insignificant as a butterfly, so simple yet so complex and beautiful. A God who creates billions of people, yet never makes two of them exactly the same. A God who not only creates them, but knows each one of them individually in detail. A God who loves each thing He created. It just staggers my imagination. How can something as insignificant as an individual human in the midst of the universe have such value to God? The Psalmist wondered the same thing:  O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him?                                            Psalm 144:3 NIV I know we were created in His image, but it still astounds me that He knows us or cares about us. I know it’s true though, the entire Bible is a testimony to His great love for us and all He created. I don’t understand it, but I know it’s true and I am so grateful that he knows and loves each of us.
