GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Encountering an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue # 190 July 06, 2001 What? Again? While my wife and I spent time in our evening Bible reading the other night, we hit a passage that went straight to the heart. It was one of those moments of conviction, that feels like a laser beam just burning through and hitting home. After reading it, I had to confess Forgive me Lord, I do this all the time without thinking about it. The context of the passage is Paul is confronting some of the sin in the church in Corinth and is giving them a brief history lesson. For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry." We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did--and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. We should not test the Lord, as some of them did--and were killed by snakes. And do not grumble, as some of them did--and were killed by the destroying angel. 1 Corinthians 10:1-10 NIV It was the last warning that struck home: And do not grumble, as some of them did
How often have we all be guilty of grumbling? About things at church? The message today wasnt very good. The worship band was off today. About things at home? What, roast beef? Not again! More laundry! Whats with this family any way? About things at work? What a lousy boss, did you know he .... I hate these customers, they are so demanding. Were called, not to be grumblers, whiners, complainers and murmurers, but to be thankful, joy filled, people of the light. Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Until next time, may Holy Spirit convict you of your grumbling heart. My you become instead the owner of a thankful, joy filled heart that blesses those around you and brings a smile to the face of our Lord. God bless.
