GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life Issue #398 January 29, 2002 My Island Adventure In the center of the lake across from my home is a small island. Its tiny and not particularly impressive, but until yesterday, I had never been there. Despite the fact that the island looked unimpressive, I have always wanted to go there. Yesterday, while walking, the dog and I crossed the ice and went for a visit to the island. We walked around the island and explored it a little. The experience was completely unsatisfying. Despite my curiosity, the island was as unimpressive as it appeared from shore. Im not certain what I expected to find, perhaps just a sense of fulfillment or accomplishment that would come from finally being there. Much of life is like my little trip to the island. We see things or wonder about them and we just know that if we went there or had one, our lives would be somehow enriched. When we finally go or buy one, it satisfies for a moment then the hunger for something else sets in. Advertisers know this and bombard us with things we must own or do to be happy and fulfilled. The truth is that people will let you down, things will break, holidays end, jobs are lost and dreams fade. Only one thing truly satisfies, an intimate relationship with Jesus. Are you a Christian, but really putting your focus on the things of this world for your fulfillment? Are you chasing meaningless little trips to the island? If so, the fulfillment you are looking for will elude you. I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want Philippians 4:11a-12 NIV What is the secret of contentment? I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 NIV Turn away from the side trips and turn back to Christ. Until next time, may you come to truly know the feeling of joy, fulfillment and contentment that only Jesus can bring. God bless.
