GLEANINGS FROM THE WORD

Experiencing an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #395 January 26, 2002

Rowdy Crowd

The crowd at the hockey game was bored. The hockey was fast paced and exciting, but something was missing.

The teams on the ice sensed that they were losing the interest of the audience, and without warning a fight broke out on the ice. It wasn’t much of a fight, in fact it seemed staged, but the crowd didn’t care.

Suddenly the crowd was on their feet cheering. They wanted blood and they wanted it NOW. A couple more small fights kept the crowd happy, and afterwards everyone seemed to be talking about what a great game it had been, especially the little dust-ups on ice.

I was reminded of the scene outside Pontius Pilate’s window:

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor.

    "Barabbas," they answered.

"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked.

    They all answered, "Crucify him!"

"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"

All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!" Matthew 27:20-25 NIV

Crowds and individuals can be very fickle. We can turn in a moment.

We’ll seldom face choices as blatant as that crowd did two thousand years ago, but everyday we face hundreds of little choices. We can choose to walk His path or we can cry out once again "crucify Him" by making the wrong choices.

If you’ve been wandering a path that screams out crucify Him, know that He still loves you and will forgive you:

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9 NIV

But I wonder when we make those choices to disobey if his ears ring with the words from the court of Pilate.

Until next time, may your choices be ones that scream out to the world and the heavens "Give me Jesus!"

God bless.

Kevin

Do you know this Jesus who will forgive all you have done and loves you unconditionally? If not, email me and I’ll share a few Bible verses that will explain why a relationship with Him is so important and a prayer that will make it possible.
